How technology is helping me learn!

Hello everyone!

In todays post I would like to write something about how technology affects my learning and everyday life. Both in school and at home it’s impossible to function without some kind of help of a mobile phone, laptop or tv. Usually these devices are related with something negative and time-wasting, but nowadays technology is not only used for entertainment.

I have to admit that in Sandvika Secondary School technology is a very important aspect and it is quite well developed. The very fact that instead of paper books we learn from digital books is already a big step ahead all the other schools. If I was told to describe how this works, I would say that first of all I am surprisingly pleased by it. The most important thing about digital books is that we don’t have to carry all the needed paperback to school everyday, because honestly said that would be a nightmare. The laptop itself weighs quite a lot and takes up a lot of space in my bag, which would be troublesome.

the girls in my class!

We use laptops every lesson to take notes in an app called OneNote, which in my opinion is a very good place to write down the most important facts from the lesson. In addition we can download the books onto our desktop, so that we don’t even need access to the internet to flip through the current topics. This makes our lives so much easier! The good thing is that we can also mark important sentences and statements in the book, by saving a bookmark in that place. In that way we can afterwards easily go back to where we finished before.

Powerpoint presentations are also a good form of teaching, and that is exactly what my school uses. This form of technology helps us take a break of keeping up with what the teacher is saying, and lets us focus on the general facts that are being shown by the projector on the board.

I think that technology is becoming more and more useful in our school and work lives, and it doesn’t do anything other that even more expanding our knowledge . I am happy that this is how I have started learning in high school.

Today we were assigned to find some information about the USA in our groups of four. In our group we divided the topics about the country between us, and then we wrote together this post which you can read below 🙂

The topics were: Politics and government, Issues, Literature and film and regions.

  • Regions

The USA can be divided into four regions: Western, which takes up nearly half of the continent and also Alaska, the Guam and Hawaii Islands, Southern, located to the east south of Western, Midwest (Central)- north of Southern and Northeast- the smallest part of the country, containing also the Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands. USA was made in 1776, when 13 British colonies were established on the Atlantic Coast.

America is the 3rd biggest country in the whole world with a population of more than 320 million, according to the U.S. Census Bureau., right after Russia and Canada. It consists of 50 states, where Alaska is the biggest, with the total area of over 1,720,000 km2 and Rhode Islands 4,001km2 makes it the smallest state of the USA.

Each region varies in different ways, but race and cultural background are the main differences. There is no state where there wouldn’t live someone from an other culture or country. The U.S. culture has also been shaped by the cultures of Native Americans, Latin Americans, Africans and Asians. Local dishes also can are , from the seafood dishes of coastal states like California, or the Creole dishes of New Orleans, to the piles of steaks devoured by meat-loving Texans. The estimated number of U.S. dialects range from a basic three – New England, Southern and Western/General America – to 24 or more . Some researchers go so far as to suggest it’s actually impossible to count the number of dialects in the United States because under a loose definition of the term, thousands of cities, towns and groups have their own varieties or dialects.

    The midwest

The Midwest is a cultural crossroads. Starting in the early 1800s easterners moved there in search of better farmland, and soon Europeans bypassed the East Coast to migrate directly to the interior: Germans to eastern Missouri, Swedes and Norwegians to Wisconsin and Minnesota. The region’s fertile soil made it possible for farmers to produce abundant harvests of cereal crops such as wheat, oats, and corn. The region was soon known as the nation’s “breadbasket.”

    The northeast

The Northeastern United States, as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, covers nine states: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. It is also the richest region of the United States. The landscape varies from the rocky coast of New England to the fertile farmland of the Ohio River Valley. Jagged cliffs rise up to a hundred feet above the ocean on Maine’s northern coast; south of the state’s West Quoddy Head Peninsula, the easternmost point in the United States, the coastline subsides to sandy beaches that extend along the rest of the Northeast’s Atlantic coastline. Between Cape Cod in Massachusetts and Cape May in New Jersey are a series of large islands, including Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, Block Island, Long Island, Manhattan, and Staten Island.

    The South

The South stretches from Virginia to Texas and includes major cities like Atlanta (Georgia), New Orleans (Louisiana) and Houston (Texas). Compared to the rest of the US, today’s southerners are more conservative as far as family and tradition are concerned, and they have a more relaxed lifestyle. Money is supposedly less important here than in other parts of the country.

    Politics and government
The United States is a constitutional democracy. It’s the federal government of fifty states that constitute the united states. The federal government was formed in 1789, and the U.S. Constitution was written in 1787. The constitution is both the oldest and shortest written constitution in the world.

The leader of the government and country is currently Barack Obama. The President of the United States. His headquarter is The White House. USA consist of three branches: Executive Branch, Judicial Branch and the Legislative Branch. The president is the leader of the Executive branch, a below him The Vice President and the Cabinet. The Legislative branch consists of the congress, the senate and the house of representatives. And last but not least, the judicial branch with the supreme court with one chief justice and eight other justices.

Many people wonder how the political system in the us is shaped. The modern political party in the U.S. is a two-party system dominated by the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. These two parties have wo every presidential election in the united states since 1852. And they have controlled the congress since 1856.

Every fourth year a new president I getting selected. The next election will be the 2016 election, which will be held on November 8, 2016. Despite it’s a long time until the election, the hunt for votes has already started. Maybe The funniest contribution to the Republican

party and the hole election is Donald Trump running for president. Obamas time is done, and the democratic party needs to find a new represented. This election is going to be exiting 🙂

USA may seem like a perfect country, but there are many issues there, such as:

    • The gun-policy
    • Poverty, homelessness

    The gun-policy

To many Europeans it is a mystery that the Americans don’t change their weapon legislation when so many people are killed by hand guns every day. Why don’t they see this obvious connection and restrict the easy access to guns?

Today the issue is debated in the USA, but not to the extent that might be expected, at least from a European point of view. Many Americans would like to see stricter control of the sale of hand guns, but their opponents are many and they are strong. In the front line is The NRA (National Rifle Association). They claim that “Guns don’t kill, – people do”.

The statistical facts show that more and more people are killed by handguns in the USA, and more and more frequently the victim has no connection with the killer. Many of the victims are school children; every other hour an American child is killed by a handgun. To buy a gun in the USA you only need the money to pay for it and an ID, and you must not have a criminal record, but the illegal market makes it possible for nearly anyone to get hold of a gun quite easily.

So, why don’t responsible politicians who see the connection between all the killings and the many hand guns on the loose take action? It is fairly obvious that a desperate person will solve his predicament violently if a gun is already at hand. But the American democratic tradition does not open up for such regulations or infringement of the individual freedom of the people. As long as the majority of the American people don’t see this connection, the politicians have no choice but to secure the rights of the people, also when it includes the right to carry arms

More than 46 million Americans lives in poverty in US, and more that half a million Americans are homeless.

What can be done to solve these problems, of poverty and homelessness? Of course, the reconstruction of food, housing and financial systems are basic roads to recovery. However, within such a vastly differentiated, multicultural society this is hard to achieve. On a more down to earth level, many believe that education is the key to winning the war on poverty for the young. Staying in school and acquiring skills and degrees keep more people off welfare. Also making jobs available for everyone who wants to work and creating affordable health care are equally important.

    Literature and Film

American literature begins with the orally transmitted myths, legends, tales, and lyrics (always songs) of Indian cultures. There was no written literature among the Indian cultures. The earliest American writings were concerned directly with the dream of a new world, and mostly accounts of pioneering motives and settlements were published.

Regional literature has always been important in the United States. Until the end of the 19th century, American literature was dominated by the works of New Englanders, such as Cotton Mather.

The American film industry, often referred to as Hollywood is the industry leader in the form of artistic expression that came to dominate the twentieth century and continues as a popular art form at the beginning of the twenty-first century.

”Hollywood” is the popular term for American cinema, which dates back to the early 1900s. The district of Hollywood, Los Angeles was found to be an attractive environment for moviemaking, with its warm, sunny and stable climate. Of course, the early films were silent, as sound technology was only developed by the late 1920s. The movie industry grew fast after this breakthrough. The history of American cinema is sometimes separated into four main periods: the silent era, Classical Hollywood cinema, New Hollywood, and the contemporary period (after 1980).

Actors in United States continues to make his mark in history. Johnny depp, Brad Pitt, Tom Hanks, Leonardo Di Caprio and Will smith are few of many who is famous almost around the whole world.

Culture: The United States is the third largest country in the world with a population of more than 320 million, because of this, the United States is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world.

The culture of the United States is primarily Western, but is influenced by African, Asian, Polynesian and Latin American cultures. The United States has its own unique social and cultural characteristics such as dialect, music, arts and social habits. American culture includes both conservative and liberal elements, scientific and religious competitiveness, political structures, risk taking and free expression, materialist and moral elements. American culture encompasses the customs and traditions of the United States. “Culture encompasses religion, food, what we wear, how we wear it, our language, marriage, music, what we believe is right or wrong, how we sit at the table, how we greet visitors, how we behave with loved ones, and a million other things,” said Cristina De Rossi, an anthropologist at Barnet and Southgate College in London.

Everyone has their own description of the United States, some would say that they are known because of Hollywood and the White House, others simply because of their special culture.

There are no boundaries for dreams- “Spare Parts” film

The week before my autumn holiday we watched a film directed by Sean McNamara called “Spare Parts”, made in 2015. The story is about 4 illegal immigrant teenagers who attend a high school in Phoenix, Arizona. When one of them decides to take part in a national robotics competition, he makes up a group of four boys who soon drive all the way to California to fulfill their dream.

One of the aspects which is shows in the film is achieving a success in such a high standard competition by totally normal boys from poor families. I think that this is something that requires a lot of sacrifice, because the consequences of failure can be very big, and one of them would be deportation to their home country, Mexico. Therefore the young engineers had to put in extra effort and work as a team to succeed.

Living as an immigrant was a very tough time for all the illegal student at Carl Hayden High School. Having to wake up every day and worry about.

Kolsåstoppen trip with my class!

A few weeks ago, my class was given an assignment in which we were supposed to visit our nearby mountain and learn about the different rock types. It’s been a while now since the trip, but in todays post I would like to write what it is like on this local mountain, and also dive more into the geological part of the hike.

Kolsås can translate into “Coal (kol) Hill (ås), which as you probably have figured out by now, means that this particular mountain is in a big part formed by coal.  The highest top of the mountain is called Varden and has 387 masl.

Kolsås is a part of the Oslo-field, and it constitutes elderly headwaters southwest of a huge, dilapidated volcano. It was created after the crust cracked up to 300 million years ago and sank in some places as much as 1,500 meters into the earth. In early Permian times the crust cracked up and lava flowed out of the area. Krokskogen-Kolsås-Nittedal lava province was formed in the sixth rift stage. This amounted to the end of the rift stage which started in south and ended farthest north. The initial rift culminated with streams of rhomb porphyry lava that covered two-thirds of Oslo Field. Most of the lava eroded away, though the lava is relatively hard and erosion-resistant and thus rises and forms hills in theterrain.IMG_3662IMG_3665

On the south east side of the mountain can we find a KIF- cabin. The cottage was originally set up at Frogner in Oslo in connection with the anniversary exhibition in 1914. It was designed by the architectural firm Berner and Berner and received the award for best tourist cabin during the Jubilee. When the exhibition was over, the cabin was bought by Christiania Idrætsforening, hence the name KIF hut. The cottage was transported by train to Sandvika station and from there transported on cane stick up to the place where the lodge stands today. The cabin was fully assembled and ready for use in 1916.IMG_3651Skjermbilde 2015-10-13 kl. 22.46.53Source:ås
